Alfajor de Medina Sidonia - A Bite of History
Discussing the history of the Alfajor de Medina Sidonia is no small feat, as it stands among the oldest confections of the Old Continent.
Documentary evidence of its existence first emerges in the 15th century. On July 2, 1487, Enrique de Guzmán, in a letter to the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, extolled the Alfajor de Medina as an undeniable delicacy.
During the Andalusian era, Medina Sidonia was considered the confectionery capital of the region, with the fame of its Alfajores crossing borders and reaching the farthest corners of the civilized world.
So widespread was its renown that today, various types of alfajores can be found in many countries, particularly in Latin America. These versions originated from the Alfajor de Medina, brought to the New World by early conquistadors as a nutritious provision for their long voyages.
Over time, local customs, tastes, and available ingredients gave rise to diverse interpretations of this treat, resulting in sweets bearing the same name but fundamentally different from the original.
Yet, the Alfajor de Medina Sidonia remains not only a delectable indulgence but also a natural product rich in nutrients, historically consumed in the Middle Ages as a dietary supplement.
