A Message to Our Customers, Suppliers and Friends,

As you are all aware, there is much concern and uncertainty over the global pandemic of coronavirus (COVID-19). Here at La Española Meats, we share that concern, as the safety and security of our clients and employees is and has always been our top priority for 37 years.

As a food manufacturer and importer, La Española Meats is inspected by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as local health authorities. We are closely following the guidelines put forth by the USDA, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding the coronavirus outbreak and best practices for food processing facilities. The following statement has been jointly issued by the FDA and the USDA:

We are not aware of any reports at this time of human illnesses that suggest COVID-19 can be transmitted by food or food packaging. However, it is always important to follow good hygiene practices (i.e., wash hands and surfaces often, separate raw meat from other foods, cook to the right temperature, and refrigerate foods promptly) when handling or preparing foods.

Also, included in CDC frequently asked questions, below is the following statement in the "how the virus spreads" section:

Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food. Before preparing or eating food it is important to always wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds for general food safety. Throughout the day wash your hands after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, or going to the bathroom.
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from food products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient, refrigerated, or frozen temperatures.

La Española Meats follows a strict Standard Sanitary Operating Procedures (SSOP) regimen as well as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) devised by leading companies in the food industry. We have instituted the following new procedures to mitigate the effects of this pandemic:

  • We have increased our efforts in educating our staff about the coronavirus outbreak and their individual well-being and hygiene. If we have any employee(s) who exhibit any indication of illness, they are instructed to stay at home. While at work, employees are expected to don protective gear and wash hands frequently throughout the day.
  • We have temporarily suspended all unnecessary business travel, client or supplier visits.
  • We have focused on sanitizing our production, packaging, warehousing and retail spaces above and beyond our daily normal standards.
  • All our air shipments being received from Spain will be sanitized before entering our facility.

We continue to manufacture the artisanal and wholesome products that you have come to enjoy from us for the past four decades and to import the finest foods Spain has to offer. Thank you for your continued support throughout the years and we wish you and your family much health and perseverance in these trying times.
